SIFF Day 20
The last week of the festival and my mini reviews are haphazard, shorter and less coherent as exhaustion creeps up on me and knocks me on my ass. Sorry!

Em (USA) 2007 *
The worst film of the entire festival- self indulgent drivel with bad camera work. Wow! Sign me up for that torture.

Perfect Match (France) 2007 **
Bad and boring French "romance". The woman is uptight and the man is self pitying, self absorbed, and self centered. Do I care whether or not they get together? No, I do not.

The Girl By the Lake (Italy) 2007 ***
Competently made murder mystery based on a Norwegian novel, Don't Look Back, by Karin Fossum. I liked the detective working the case although I had no interest in his problems with his wife and daughter. This movie was certainly watchable but nothing special.

I didn't think Em had screened yet. Where did you see it? Our tastes don't always overlap, but they do often enough to kick it down a bit on the priority list on the basis of your dislike. I liked the director's 2000 Magic of Marciano, even if I don't remember much about it, but maybe this is a case of "past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results." (An extreme example of "past performance..." is Lukas Moodyson, who made the hideously awful Hole in my Heart after the impressive Fucking Åmål and Lilya 4ever.)

I saw Em at a press screening. Maybe you would like it. I talked to one person that liked it. If you know Max, she walked out in the first five minutes. I wanted to walk out but I stayed for the whole thing.
